4D ultrasound is a supplementary imaging method in which a moving three-dimensional image of the baby is viewed during a pregnancy ultrasound.

A pregnancy ultrasound is an examination in which the baby’s heartbeat, the week of pregnancy and the baby’s growth are assessed using sound waves. 4D imaging is a moving image added to this examination; the basis of the organ examination is 2D ultrasound. Pregnancy ultrasound and 4D imaging are done at the practice of Op. Dr. Hüseyin Efe Akalın in Kuşadası.

Who are pregnancy ultrasound and 4D imaging for?

4D ultrasound is not a separate screening test; it is used during a pregnancy ultrasound performed for a medical reason. An ultrasound may be done at the practice in the following situations:

  • Confirming the pregnancy and seeing the baby’s heartbeat
  • Checking whether the baby’s growth matches the week of pregnancy
  • Regular check-ups during pregnancy follow-up
  • Continuing follow-up here that started with another doctor

When should you seek care without waiting for your ultrasound appointment?

If you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced or absent baby’s movements (especially in pregnancies beyond 28 weeks) or any kind of abdominal or lower abdominal (pelvic) pain, go to a healthcare facility without waiting for your appointment day.

In an emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 4D ultrasound the same as a detailed anomaly scan?

No. A detailed anomaly scan is an examination in which the baby’s organs are checked systematically; 4D provides moving three-dimensional images and does not replace this examination. Referral for a detailed anomaly scan is planned at your visit.

Usually no special preparation is needed for a pregnancy ultrasound done over the abdomen. If preparation is needed, you will be told in advance.

There is no evidence that diagnostic ultrasound performed for a medical reason harms the mother or the baby. Guidelines recommend that ultrasound be performed for a medical reason.

What the finding means is discussed with you; if needed, you are referred for further examination.
