Unplanned pregnancy counseling
Infertility is when pregnancy does not occur despite regular, unprotected intercourse; the first step is evaluating the couple together.
The cause of difficulty getting pregnant may lie with the woman, the man or both; that is why the evaluation is done with both partners taking part. At the practice in Kuşadası, Op. Dr. Hüseyin Efe Akalın carries out the initial evaluation through a consultation, examination and ultrasound; which tests are needed is decided during the consultation.
When is an evaluation recommended?
- Under age 35, if pregnancy has not occurred after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse
- At age 35 and over, sooner: after six months
- Without waiting, if your periods are irregular, very infrequent or absent
- If you have a known uterine or tubal disease, or endometriosis
- If a male-factor problem is known or suspected
- In case of recurrent pregnancy loss
The right time for you is decided together during the examination.
Which symptoms mean you should seek medical care?
If any of the following symptoms occur during the evaluation or treatment process, you are advised to go to a healthcare facility. In an emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Severe pain
High fever
Heavy bleeding
Shortness of breath

Frequently Asked Questions
Is infertility only a woman's problem?
No. In a significant share of cases, male factors or combined factors play a role. That is why the evaluation is started for both partners together; the aim is not to find someone to blame but to determine the right next step.
Which tests are done before getting pregnant?
The tests aim to understand ovulation, the condition of the fallopian tubes and the inside of the uterus, and the semen findings. Not every couple needs all of them; which ones you need is decided during the consultation.
Is IVF done at the practice?
No. IVF (IVF/ICSI) can only be performed at licensed centers. The initial evaluation is done at the practice, and if needed, information is given about the next options.
Should my partner and I come to the appointment together?
If possible, yes. Evaluating the couple together is recommended; if you cannot come together, the first consultation can still take place.
